ROCK SPRINGS

Named after a former spring that flowed through town, Rock Springs sprung from the growth and development of the area’s coal-mining industry. The booming railroad and mining work left behind a culturally diverse community, considered to be home to 56 nationalities.

The railroad’s conversion to diesel and oil power in the mid-1900s drove out many of the city’s coal mines. Today, Rock Springs thrives with trona mines, oil, gas and other industry sectors, keeping the city vibrant with locals and visitors alike.

Although the mining industries have changed over the years, Rock Springs is still known as a local hub for history, dining, shopping and attractions. Check out its award-winning downtown, which boasts more than a dozen locally owned bars and restaurants, a vibrant arts and theater scene, and the Rock Springs Historical Museum.

GREEN RIVER

Who needs an amusement park when nature has all the best rides? And, in Green River, you don’t have to worry about the lines. World-class fishing along with tubing and kayaking at a whitewater park are just a few of the many ways to enjoy the great outdoors, not to mention the views. The town is also known for its incredible mountain-biking opportunities, including the Wilkins Peak Trail System — named one of the top singletrack trails in Wyoming. See more on page 24.

When you’re not on the go, you can enjoy the comforts of Green River’s downtown. Browse local boutiques for one-of-a-kind items, unwind with a refreshing brew as you take in the surrounding buttes and plateaus or stroll along the Greenbelt Pathway that meanders through town.

FARSON & EDEN VALLEY

Now home to thriving farming and ranching communities, Farson and the Eden Valley once served as a main thoroughfare for passing travelers and settlers. Then, in 1907, John M. Farson’s largescale irrigation development attracted long-term residents with the promise of fertile lands and lush fruit orchards.

Nowadays, the area offers visitors an abundance of outdoor activities, from hiking and biking the Mormon and Oregon trails to camping, stargazing and boating at Big Sandy Reservoir. Plus, no trip to Farson and Eden Valley is complete without a stop at Farson Mercantile for a famous Big Cone ice cream.

SUPERIOR

Fueled by the booming times of the Union Pacific Coal Mines, this town was once home to nine working mines and led the West in coal production. While the town’s mining days are gone, you’ll still feel that Western spirit when you visit. Learn about local coal-mining and town history at the Superior Museum, hike scenic Continental Divide trails or see one of the navigation arrows formerly used by early 1900s airmail pilots.

GRANGER

Once a center for fur trappers, Granger became an integral crossroads for many pioneers seeking westward passage. A popular stop along the way was the Granger Stage Station State Historic Site. Originally built in the 1850s for the Overland Trail, the station also attracted travelers from other famous routes, including the Pony Express and the Oregon, California and Mormon trails. Today, you can step inside the old building, explore trail monuments and learn about the history of fur trapping, trading and the stagecoach industry.

WAMSUTTER

Originally inhabited by the Shoshone and Ute tribes, Wamsutter was founded in 1868 to service the Transcontinental Railroad. Nowadays, it’s a base for sheep ranching and natural-resource development — not to mention a prime destination for spotting local wildlife. Admire southwest Wyoming’s sagebrush desert and observe its unique critters — including North America’s only herd of desert elk — and hike along miles of nature trails with a camera and binoculars so you don’t miss any animal sightings.

SWEETWATER EVENTS COMPLEX & SPEEDWAY

Set against the beauty of the White Mountain, Sweetwater Events Complex offers year-round fun for all ages. With 320 acres of space, this facility is one of the largest in Wyoming and hosts a variety of events. Wild West fans can watch talented cowpokes at thrilling rodeos, like the Red Desert Roundup Rodeo. Celebrate summer with family and friends during Wyoming’s Big Show featuring carnival rides, concerts and more. Or enjoy a fall weekend of fast-paced excitement as horses and jockeys thunder across the track during the Sweetwater Downs race series.
