With 77 diverse neighborhoods, Chicago is ripe with unique experiences — and that goes for its restaurants, too. From international eats at small mom-and-pops to fancy steakhouses, eating here has never

Home to the Pullman National Historical Park, Chicago’s first National Monument, Pullman is a vibrant glimpse of times gone by, complete with beautiful historic brick buildings. At Lexington Betty Smokehouse, award-winning chef Dominique Leach taps into her roots to create her own style of barbecue. Take home a bottle of one of her sauces. And while you’re in the area be sure to make a pit stop at Old Fashioned Donuts, a staple in the Roseland community.

An early-20th century mecca for African American culture, Bronzeville continues that legacy with local art galleries and one-of-a-kind restaurants interwoven with historical landmarks. Bronzeville Winery celebrates the community through its colorful interior design and creative American fare from lauded chef Lamar Moore.

A one-time home to German immigrants, Lincoln Square has retained its small-town charm with plenty of architectural gems, many of which house the area’s specialty shops. Taking its name and recipes from chef Darnell Reed’s great-grandmother, Luella’s Southern Kitchen pairs classic Southern dishes with heartfelt hospitality.

Home to The University of Chicago, world-class museums, and tranquil parks, Hyde Park offers visitors plenty to see and do. James Beard Award-winning chef Erick Williams supports the neighborhood with his critically acclaimed Virtue Restaurant & Bar and the laid-back Daisy’s Po-Boy and Tavern, where you’ll find impeccably made New Orleans staples served in a festive setting. With its mix of exciting nightlife spots, chic art galleries, and modern architecture along the Chicago River, River North is a city lover’s dream. An updated take on the classic steakhouse, RPM Steak takes an aim-to-please attitude with a crowd-pleasing menu of meaty favorites.

Formerly home to meatpackers and industrial warehouses, the West Loop has been transformed into one of the city’s trendiest neighborhoods, brimming with hip restaurants and hotels. At Guinness Open Gate Brewery you’ll find plenty of the beloved namesake stout on tap, along with tasty global cuisine, inside a beautiful loft-like space.

Ornate buildings, fanciful storefronts, and restaurants serving authentic Chinese cuisine are all part of the allure of Chicago’s century-old Chinatown. A modern Asian steakhouse, HOLU features a variety of the world’s finest meats and seafood, much of which is prepared by skillful servers on smokeless table grills.

An eclectic mix of vintage stores, indie art galleries, and colorful public art, West Town delightfully embraces its hipster status. Dine along the Chicago River on the open-air rooftop at Azul. This lively restaurant offers an expansive menu of Latin-inspired seafood plates. From funky eateries and live entertainment venues to some of the city’s best indie boutiques, Wicker Park is always bustling. Taking a from-scratch attitude, the father-and-son team at Kama Bistro offers boldly flavored contemporary Indian cuisine, as well as cocktails that incorporate Indian spices.

A charming mix of majestic homes, tree-lined boulevards, and trendy cocktail bars and restaurants, multicultural Logan Square checks all the boxes. The same could be said of award-winning Daisies, a coffee bar with impeccable pastries during the day and a terrific farm-to-table restaurant at night.

Offering a cool combo of urban savvy, industrial roots, and under-the-radar dining, Avondale is Chicago’s hidden secret. At Anelya, husband-and-wife chefs Johnny Clark and Beverly Kim work side by side to create their version of heartfelt Ukrainian cuisine.

Home to one of Chicago’s largest LGBTQ+ communities, Andersonville was once an enclave to Swedish immigrants, who founded the local Swedish American Museum. Today, the streets are lined with charming boutiques and cozy restaurants. The latter includes Oda, offering authentic Turkish comfort food with Eastern European flair.

With plenty of lakefront green space, a hidden lily pond, and a free zoo, Lincoln Park lives up to its name and then some. A fusion of art, culture, and philanthropy, Esmé offers an innovative tasting menu in its intimate dining room. For a more casual experience, head to neighboring Bar Esmé.

A rich historical area, Uptown is full of beautiful vintage theatres and old-school jazz clubs from the past, along with the international community of its present. With that cultural mix comes a wealth of global restaurants, including Demera Ethiopian Restaurant, which serves authentic Ethiopian cuisine in a welcoming setting.

Home to the legendary Wrigley Field and Northalsted (the nation’s first officially recognized LGBTQ+ neighborhood), Lakeview is nothing if not diverse. Equally unique is 2d Restaurant, a hand-drawn two-dimensional Asian eatery that feels like walking into a comic book. Take in the scenery as you snack on Asian treats like Taiwanese fried chicken and mochi doughnuts.

With its bounty of stores offering Mexican items like baked goods and artisan crafts, Little Village (or La Villita, as the locals call it) offers a vibrant Mexican cultural experience. Inside a chalet-style building, La Catedral Cafe & Restaurant features some of the city’s best chilaquiles, as well as other iconic Mexican dishes.

Puerto Rico seems a lot closer when you’re in Humboldt Park, with the area’s many colorful murals and lively festivals. Then there are the restaurants, like Papa’s Cache Sabroso, which offers authentic Puerto Rican cuisine — their pollo chon (rotisserie chicken) and jibarito sandwich are legendary — and friendly island hospitality.

Sure, Bridgeport is home to the Chicago White Sox baseball team, but a thriving arts and dining scene can also be found here. Family-owned and -operated, Franco’s Ristorante has been making patrons feel welcome since 1989, and features made-from-scratch Italian dishes ranging from whipped ricotta tuffo to tortellini carbonara.

With world-class museums and historic areas like Motor Row and the Prairie Avenue District, the South Loop offers plenty to do. Set inside a 1905 Romanesque Revival building, The Chicago Firehouse Restaurant combines stellar steakhouse fare with beautifully restored interiors. Its lounge, The Blue Room, embraces a spot-on speakeasy vibe.

Latino street art, museums, live music venues, and charming independent restaurants can all be found in Pilsen. HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen, from husband-and-wife owners Thai and Danielle Dang, pairs Vietnamese street food and family recipes with modern touches in signature dishes like fragrant papaya salad and crispy chicken wings.

With the greatest concentration of greystone mansions in the city and home to the K-Town Historic District, North Lawndale is a residential architecture lover’s dream. Soulé chefowner Bridgette Flagg, who grew up in the area, cooks up Creole-infused soul food like blackened catfish served over dirty rice with shrimp.

Cozy up on a leather sofa near the fireplace on chilly evenings.

Architecturally significant homes can also be found in Beverly, often called a “village in the city” for its small-town vibe. This area is also well known for its proud Irish heritage.
