Relax and revel in the beauty that enfolds Northern Virginia. Thanks to the region’s location along the “Atlantic Flyway,” it has become a haven for bird-watching enthusiasts, especially at spots like Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve and Huntley Meadows Park, both in Alexandria.
Explore the beauty around Vienna’s Meadowlark Botanical Gardens’ Korean Bell Garden, a unique landmark that celebrates nature and Korean culture. Then step back in time at Frying Pan Farm Park in Herndon while horseback riding through vast acres offering a glimpse at 20th-century farm life.
2 HISTORIC HIKES
How about a side of history with your outdoor exploration? The Bull Run Occoquan Trail played a vital role in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Discover its battle points and landmarks, as well as remnants of makeshift forts.

Get your pulse racing with high-flying adventures at Go Ape Zipline & Adventure Park, where you’ll traverse 50-foot-high tree-to-tree crossings and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Springfield.
Take in sweeping vistas of the Potomac River while climbing routes that range from 25 to 75 feet at Great Falls Park, one of the only climbing areas in the East Coast that allows rock climbing directly over water.
4 OPEN-WATER ADVENTURES
From lakes and rivers to waterparks and streams, there are plenty of ways to get out on the water in Fairfax County.
Known for prolific bass fishing, the serene waters at Burke Lake Park in Fairfax Station are a must for freshwater fishing fanatics. The 218-acre lake is also a favorite of local boaters.
Traveling with kids? Take them to Lake Fairfax Park in Reston for a day of water-based fun, which includes an outdoor waterpark, acres of water slides and a lazy river.
During the summer, Mason Neck State Park becomes a welcome refuge for those looking to escape the heat. Located at the intersection of three large waterways, it’s a fantastic place for kayaking, canoeing and bald eagle spotting.
