PENNSYLVANIA’S HISTORIC CANDY SHOPS When it comes to Pennsylvania candy companies, Hershey’s is likely the first that comes to mind—but, there’s plenty more where that came from. Discover historic candy shops that deserve Hershey levels of hype. Find America’s oldest continuously operating confectionery shop in Philadelphia: Shane Confectionery, which has been operating since 1863. This family-owned establishment is famous for its buttercreams, made with the Shane family’s 100-year-old recipe on the same machine that has been used for decades. Family-owned and operated since 1952, Callie’s Candy Kitchen in Mountainhome has become a beloved spot for both locals and vacationers. Best sellers include chocolate-covered gummy bears, chocolate-covered peanut butter pretzels, and chocolate sunflower seeds. Daffin’s Candies in Sharon is a candy lover’s paradise. Daffin’s offers an impressive array of handmade chocolates, fudge, and nostalgic candies, but is perhaps better known for the store’s larger-than-life chocolate sculptures, including a 125-pound chocolate turtle. Gardners Candies, with several locations throughout central PA, has been crafting delectable chocolates since 1897. Known for its mouthwatering Original Peanut Butter Meltaway and homemade fudge, Gardners continues to create confections with the same dedication to quality that has defined them for more than a century. Purity Candy in Allenwood has been crafting delicious candies since 1907. This small-batch candy maker takes pride in using high-quality ingredients and traditional recipes to produce their famous peanut butter cups, nut clusters, and coconut bonbons. Romolo Chocolates in Erie creates artisanal chocolates using traditional European techniques. Their signature truffles, chocolate-covered fruit, and unique flavor combinations have made them a go-to destination for chocolate enthusiasts, selling more than 450,000 packages of confections annually. While Van Winkle’s in Lebanon does not have a storefront, it supplies dozens of the region’s stores with its opera fudge: a creamy fondant treat coated in chocolate. The classic flavor is its most popular. In Lititz, Wilbur Chocolate has been a sweet staple since 1884. Don’t miss its chocolate-covered caramels, which come in a variety of choices including dark chocolate, milk chocolate, sea salt-topped, and more.
