DOREEN KETCHENS The people of New Orleans are why you visit New Orleans, and jazz clarinetist and musical legend Doreen Ketchens is no exception. She’s played for four U.S. presidents, recorded more than 20 albums since 1994, and still plays regularly. Born and raised in New Orleans, you can find Doreen playing the streets of the French Quarter, specifically Royal Street. " THIS IS A WALKING CITY. YOU CAN DISCOVER AND ENJOY SO MUCH JUST BY WALKING IN THE CITY." Who is your favorite New Orleanian? Louis Armstrong. What’s the best neighborhood in New Orleans? Tremé. Where would you take a visitor on their first trip to New Orleans? Café du Monde, The Pharmacy Museum, and Commander’s Palace. Where would you go to see live music? The corner of Royal and St. Peter streets, Preservation Hall, Snug Harbor, and Palm Court Jazz Café. Describe New Orleans in one word. Eclectic. What's your #1 tip for visiting New Orleans? Remember to tip the street musicians. MASON HEREFORD Mason Hereford is the chef/owner of several Uptown restaurants, including award-winning counter-service joint Turkey and the Wolf, breakfast spot Molly’s Rise and Shine, and the recently opened Hungry Eyes, which serves sit-down dinner with an '80s twist. Growing up in Virginia, he didn’t know New Orleans was “the greatest place on Earth” until he made a decision to move here, sight unseen, more than 20 years ago. He quickly realized it would be his forever home. "It’s the most special place I’ve ever been, and I will never leave.” “THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF LIVE MUSIC HERE. IF YOU LISTEN TO WWOZ RADIO, YOU CAN FIND ACTS ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT." What makes New Orleans such a special place? The people of New Orleans are so welcoming and gracious. What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten here? Tan Dinh on the West Bank. I get the fish sauce chicken wings, Korean short ribs, egg rolls, maybe a banh mi. If it’s not there, I’m getting fried chicken at McHardy’s. What’s the best drink you’ve had in New Orleans? Mezcal margarita at Barrel Proof. Bacchanal is also an amazing place to drink wine. It’s a beautiful day outside. How are you spending it? Get a daiquiri, take a walk at Crescent Park, hit Pizza Delicious for a slice, go swimming at The Country Club, jump on the streetcar, eat on Oak Street, and catch a show at The Maple Leaf.
