GREAT LAKES SEAWAY TRAIL Start at Erie Bluffs State Park, with its stunning view of Lake Erie from the park’s 90-foot bluffs. Learn about Presque Isle’s unique flora and fauna at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, then continue to the Presque Isle State Park to experience the splendor of this peninsula, which contains Pennsylvania’s only “seashore.” And finish up your tour with a visit to Penn Shore Winery and Vineyards in North East, where you can see—and sip—Pennsylvania’s contribution to the growing Lake Erie wine scene. THE BUCKTAIL TRAIL SCENIC THE BUCKTAIL TRAIL SCENIC BYWAY Start this 100-mile trail at Bucktail Overlook, known as “the top of the world” for its jaw-dropping views. At Elk State Forest, explore more than 210,000 acres of hardwood and mixed oak forest, watching for the elk that gave the forest its name. Sproul State Forest’s rugged hillsides, carved by the Susquehanna River, are perfect for hiking. For prime hanggliding (even just to watch!), stop by Hyner View State Park in North Bend. Bucktail State Park Natural Area in Mill Hall offers a beautiful 75-mile drive along the narrow Bucktail Trail. HISTORIC NATIONAL ROAD To glimpse 18th-century life, stop by Washington Park Log Cabin and tour the stockade and blacksmith’s shop. Pull over at Hopwood for the Scenic Overlook and its staggering views. In Farmington, the reconstructed fort at Fort Necessity National Battlefield will transport you to the start of the French and Indian War. If you’re vying to get out on the water, the Yough Lake Marina is a perfect spot to rent a boat or take your own out onto the glimmering Youghiogheny River Lake.
