STARTING POINT: WYOMING-SOUTH DAKOTA BORDER, NEAR NORTHEAST WYOMING WELCOME CENTER, BEULAH A Vore Buffalo Jump near Beulah Stop by the small interpretive center to gain insight into how this natural sinkhole was used as a buffalo jump (or trap) from about 1500 to 1800 A.D. by at least five different Native American tribes. B Aladdin general Store Aladdin Groceries, fishing supplies, Western wear and antiques are just a few things you’ll find at this gem, a general store built in 1896. Be sure to pick up some old-fashioned candy or a sarsaparilla to enjoy on the front porch. C Devils Tower National Monument near Hulett & Sundance Hike one of the four scenic trails at America’s first national monument, a 1,267-foot striated rock tower that gained fame as the filming site for Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Learn more about the monument on p. 51. D gillette’s Main Street Gillette Walk Gillette’s thriving Main Street for its homegrown shops, delicious local restaurants and a handy visitor center all in the heart of town. E Hole-in-the-Wall near Kaycee Eroded by the elements, this towering red-sandstone formation and lush valley was once a hideout for cattle-rustling outlaws like Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch Gang. F Jim gatchell Memorial Museum Buffalo Browse the impressive personal collection of Jim Gatchell, a local pharmacist and historian who served settlers, frontiersmen and members of the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne tribes in the early 1900s. G WYO Theater Sheridan See Wyoming history through the lens of the WYO, a historical vaudeville theater. This 1923 landmark, known in its heyday for all types of lavish entertainment, was rescued from disrepair in the late 1980s. The WYO continues to thrill with live performances, brew fests and opera. H Museum of Flight and Aerial Firefighting Greybull Planes on display at this cool outdoor museum include Privateer tankers used as firebombers and a maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. I Washakie Museum & Cultural Center Worland Exhibits on paleontology, archaeology and early settlements portray the relationship between the historical inhabitants of the Bighorn Basin and their environment. J Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area near Lovell Hwy. 37, the recreation area’s south entrance, is a scenic road that passes through the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range on the way to spectacular Devil’s Canyon Overlook. Experience one or more of a dozen short hikes to view the lake, wild horses and the massive multicolored canyon walls, or head down to Bighorn Lake and book a boat tour. Learn more on p. 52.
