Yurts, Savage River Lodge Frostburg, Maryland Elevate camping to glamping with a luxurious yurt stay at Savage River Lodge. A yurt is a circular structure traditionally used by nomadic cultures of Central Asia. But at the Lodge, these permanent accommodations are anything but sparse. More on page 74. Lobby, Hotel Anthracite Carbondale, Pennsylvania History is proudly on display in the lobby of Hotel Anthracite. Parked just before the front desk, three massive blocks of anthracite coal are joined by iron rails to form a 7-foot-tall vertical sculpture. Created by artist Jeff George, the sculpture is a nod to Carbondale’s significance as the site of the first underground anthracite coal mine in America. “The lobby provides a sense of place,” says director of marketing Sarah O’Fee. “Visitors get a glimpse into the past and a taste of Carbondale’s rich heritage.” Discover the rest of historic coal country in downtown Carbondale or nearby Scranton, just a quick jaunt from the hotel. Treetop Suite, The Mermaid & The Alligator Key West, Florida Climb the winding staircase and leave the world behind in the Treetop Suite at legendary Key West bed and breakfast The Mermaid & The Alligator. Most visitors are blown away by the suite’s impressive, pitched-wood ceiling, says innkeeper Diana Abella. “If you look out the window, you will see the tree tops and a huge Royal Poinciana with clusters of beautiful red flowers.” The suite was remodeled in 2021 to add bright colors, soft linens, and intricate wicker details.
