Returning to something you thought you recognized, only to realize that it’s irresistibly new again. As Heraclitus mused, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”
The Western Slope has always felt like home to me. I studied at CMU and began my adult life in Grand Junction. Over the last 15 years I’ve departed, explored, and returned many times; beckoned by that elusive gravitational pull of Grand Junction. She is a mysterious lover, one that natives and visitors alike will attest to.
If you grew up here, you’ve likely heard of this enigmatic force referred to as more of a curse then a blessing. “Take some dirt with you when you leave, or you’ll be back in no time.” A common refrain that ostensibly speaks to our deeper sense that there’s something unique, if not downright special here – a secret so utterly enchanting that you might find yourself powerless against its charm.
Living and working elsewhere has helped me appreciate just how unrestrained our access to a pristine natural experience truly is in Grand Junction. The friction between daily life and a profound connection to the sublime beauty of the outdoors is almost nonexistent here.
I choose to experience this churning vortex of Grand Junction’s energy as a siren’s call, alluring me back into the wild, the uncharted and the unexplored. The dynamism of the environment in this part of the country will always present new challenges and wonders; I welcome that unknown frontier with a quickening of spirit and a heightened sense of adventure.
Those willing to venture out and explore the Western Slope will inevitably find something new and vital in themselves, and in our shared connection to something much bigger. A stirring in their soul that is exquisitely reflected in the overwhelming beauty of this ever-changing landscape.
So give in, surrender and dive deeply into the rugged and unspoiled intrigue of this Western Wonderland.
