The Picture City The town of Hot Springs was founded as a frontier health spa, capitalizing on springs of warm mineral waters in Fall River Canyon. It continues to be a growing arts mecca, cultural center and healing retreat. The springs feed Fall River, which winds through historic downtown Hot Springs. The Walking Tour takes you along Fall River and describes details of the beautiful and unique architecture of Hot Springs, which is filled with classic turn-of-the-century sandstone buildings. MUSEUMS Visit an indoor active dig site and view Ice Age fossils at The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs. The site is the final resting place for over 60 large Columbian and woolly mammoths, as well as an additional 87 animal species that became trapped in a spring-fed sinkhole during the last ice age — the largest concentration of mammoth remains in the world. Take a self-guided tour, peek into the laboratory for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the scientific work researchers conduct on site, or get hands on with kids’ learning activities. Fans of stones and bones should explore the World Fossil Finder Museum. It houses fossils from around the world, from the earliest and richest Ice Age fossil discovery to some of the largest marine predators to ever exist. See one of the earliest mastodons in North America and marvel at the beauty of “Debby Sue,” the largest Tylosaurus found in South Dakota. Journey outside of Hot Springs to the Trails Trains & Pioneer Museum in Edgemont to see the start of the Mickelson Trail and extensive displays that highlight fascinating local history. THINGS TO DO Established in 1890, Evans Plunge Mineral Springs is the oldest tourist attraction in the Black Hills. Relax and replenish in the warm mineral waters of this indoor natural spring pool. Try the waterslides, swing rings, kiddie pool, steam room and saunas at this year-round facility. Take flight with Western Horizons Hot Air Balloons. View the sunrise and stunning panoramic views of the Southern Hills on a hot air balloon ride. Make plans to attend the Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival. This celebration in the sky includes morning balloon launches, a night glow, Kid Zone, Art Walk & Chalk, sidewalk sales and more throughout the town. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES The fish are always biting at Trout Haven Ranch. They furnish all the equipment needed to catch trout, and no license is required. This is a perfect stop for the anglers in your group. Take in breathtaking scenic views at Angostura Reservoir while camping, boating or fishing. Sheps Canyon Recreation Area is nestled along the western edge of Angostura Reservoir. It offers great access to the boat ramp, excellent shore fishing opportunities and a horse camp, too.
