Take in fresh air, scenery and sightseeing on these guided and self-guided walking tours throughout South Dakota. For a peek into the past, visit the Keystone Historical Museum housed in a Victorian schoolhouse in Keystone, and then go on the self-guided “Old Town” Walking Tour to see 19 sites, from a gold mine to mining-era hotels. In Aberdeen, take your pick from two historic districts to explore on a self-guided stroll. In the Highlands Historic District, walk along North Main Street between 12th and 15th avenues to see 17 houses dating between 1907–1969, or marvel at many turn-of-thecentury homes in the Hagerty & Lloyd Historic District, which extends from southeast Third Avenue to southeast Sixth Avenue between Arch and Jay streets. Pierre’s Trail of Governors combines history and art, with a trail of bronze sculptures honoring the state’s governors that runs through downtown and up to the Capitol building and Capitol Lake complex. For a spookier side of history, make your way to the Old West town of Deadwood for the guided Haunted History Walking Tour led by a local historian. Then, visit the Mt. Moriah Cemetery ($2 entry fee) to see the final resting places of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Potato Creek Johnny, Preacher Henry Weston Smith, Seth Bullock and Blanche Colman (the first female attorney in South Dakota). The Deadwood Visitor and Information Center also offers brochures of the self-guided Downtown Walking Tour, allowing you to explore Deadwood at your own pace and learn about the town’s rough ‘n’ tumble Gold Rush days. Meanwhile, art is all around on the Sioux Falls SculptureWalk. The largest annual exhibit of public sculptures in the world features more than 60 works placed each spring in the heart of downtown, making it easy to stroll to nearby restaurants, bars, boutiques and the scenic Falls Park on the Big Sioux River. In Watertown, go on a sculpture scavenger hunt when you follow the Watertown Artwalk to spot 16 pieces, ranging from whimsical to historical, scattered throughout downtown.
