Winter Festivals

Cooler months lead to cool festivals throughout the Keystone State. Pennsylvania’s annual wintertime temps reach as low as 19 degrees Fahrenheit with highs in the 33–45-degree range. Hit the slopes, drop a line through an icy lake, tap for maple syrup—you can do all these and more at Pennsylvania’s winter fests. One of the coolest celebrations on the packed 2022 winter events schedule is IceFest Jan. 27–30, 2022, an annual bash held in Chambersburg. Ice carving is the centerpiece of what may well be Pennsylvania’s largest ice festival. Meanwhile, the Marienville Winter Fest on Jan. 29, 2022 in the Snowmobile Capital of Pennsylvania invites revelers to bring their snowmobiles, ice skates, and tubes (for sledding) to the tiny town of Marienville. For pro anglers looking for a chilly day of fishing at the state’s cooler destinations, the WPA Hardwater Tournament Series Jan. 22–Mar. 5, 2022 is for you. Put on your cold-weather gear for this annual ice fishing tournament that takes place throughout the northeast, including Pennsylvania. The Pocono Mountains—the town of Jim Thorpe, specifically—is the site of the Jim Thorpe WinterFest Feb. 19–20, 2022. This event features ice carvings, live music, horse-drawn carriage rides, food and drink specials, ice sculpture bars for the adults, a special Kid’s Club area, and the Mug Walk: purchase a souvenir Jim Thorpe mug, bring it to participating businesses, and get it filled with hot chocolate and other tasty winter treats. Traditions run deep in Somerset County at the annual Tree Tapping Ceremony on Feb. 26, 2022. Maple demonstrations, samples of maple treats, and a visit from Queen Maple herself and this year’s Maple Queen contestants are all part of the fun. You also will find maple syrup-centric activities throughout Potter and Tioga counties during the 18th annual Maple Weekend from March 19–20, 2022, when 23 farms offer tours, tapping demonstrations, and pure maple syrup products (everything from barbecue sauce to cotton candy). Note: Check festival websites for the latest Covid-19-related information that may affect festival dates.
