Union Market’s neighbor, La Cosecha (“time of the harvest” in English), celebrates Latin American heritage through culinary mastery. Think cuisine from El Salvador, chocolates from Venezuela and coffee from Panama. The red-brick Victorian edifice of Eastern Market gives way to the mother of all DC food halls. Breakfast food, seafood, baked goods and home wares are all available. Watch out for farmers’ and crafters’ markets on the weekends. SUPERSTAR CHEFS DC’s brightest culinary stars lead inside and outside the kitchen. Amy Brandwein, the chef/owner behind Centrolina and Piccolina in CityCenterDC, has been nominated for numerous awards at the local and national level. In 2017, she accepted the James Beard Foundation’s Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Program fellowship, signifying her role as a trailblazer for women restaurateurs. José Andrés is a worldwide leader in humanitarian efforts through his World Central Kitchen, which has distributed more than 50 million free meals all over the globe. You can savor the chef’s incredibly innovative cuisine at five restaurants in Penn Quarter. Jamie Leeds, an LGBTQ+ small business owner, brought a bivalve bonanza to DC when she opened Hank’s Oyster Bar in 2005. She has also shared proceeds from special menus to support young queer women of color in DC and has raised money to improve the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to launching a cafe/shop/eatery (Maketto) and the city’s newest dumpling hot spot (Yoko Kota), Erik Bruner-Yang also founded Power of 10, which raises money to support full-time jobs at independent restaurants that then provide meals to those in need.
