OH, THOSE SUMMER NIGHTS MOVIES UNDER THE STARS Numerous DC neighborhoods break out big screens for films once the sun goes down. Options typically include NoMa Summer Screen, Sunset Cinema at The Wharf, the Golden Cinema Series in Farragut Park and Park Up DC at RFK Campus. MOONLIT MEMORIALS The grandeur of the National Mall only increases when the stars come out. A nighttime visit with the statue of Abe inside the Lincoln Memorial is highly recommended; a contemplative stroll through the National World War II Memorial is also a must. A GARDEN OF DELIGHTS The city teems with open-air beer gardens during the summer. Wunder Garten brings Bavaria to NoMa, Hook Hall will have you gaming the night away in Park View and you can sip and savor under the famous Elizabeth Taylor mural at Dacha Beer Garden in Shaw. HOLIDAY GETAWAY MEMORIAL DAY – MAY 31 Summer’s first holiday is marked by the National Memorial Day Concert, typically held at the U.S. Capitol the day before the National Memorial Day Parade traverses down Constitution Avenue. INDEPENDENCE DAY – JULY 4 Held virtually last year, A Capitol Fourth hopes to return to the U.S. Capitol with unforgettable performances by the National Symphony Orchestra. The concert is followed by an incredible fireworks display over the National Mall. LABOR DAY – SEPT. 6 On the Sunday prior to the holiday, the National Symphony Orchestra performs on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. On the day-of, celebrate with a visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Potomac River estate. MAKE WAVES AT WATERFRONTS GEORGETOWN Head to Key Bridge Boathouse, where you can enjoy a two-hour kayak tour at sunset thanks to Boating in DC. You’ll see wildlife; gorgeous monuments; and Theodore Roosevelt Island, a national memorial to the 26th president. NATIONAL HARBOR Ride up and up on the 180-foot-tall Capital Wheel, gaze at stunning outdoor public art on a small sand beach, test your swing at Topgolf and play a hand or two (or more) at MGM National Harbor. CAPITOL RIVERFRONT Enjoy splash fountains, pop-up markets and city views at Canal Park. Afterwards, savor Italian cuisine at Osteria Morini or indulge your inner wine connoisseur at District Winery. THE WHARF Grab a bite from a food vendor or patio, stroll along activity-laden public piers – think: oversize board games, swings and sculptures – and embark on a water taxi or kayaking voyage.
