A Chicago winter may tempt you to cozy up indoors, but there are plenty of fun ways to shake things up outside. Try these cool winter activities. SNOWSHOEING Northerly Island is a beautiful peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan. With lots of trails, this nature preserve is the perfect place to enjoy snowshoeing in downtown Chicago. Check the calendar for their Polar Adventure Days series, when you can meet cold-weather creatures, make winter crafts, and sip hot chocolate. SLEDDING The Soldier Field Sledding Hill is located just south of the stadium off 18th Street. With a lovely view of Burnham Harbor on one side, and the city’s South Loop on the other, sledding in the city has never been more scenic. The Chicago Park District pumps out faux snow when there isn’t enough of the real stuff, ensuring that the hill is always white and fluffy. CURLING Channel your inner Olympian with this icy game of precision. Part shuffleboard, part sweeping, you can try your hand at curling at The Rink at Gallagher Way in Wrigleyville. In the West Loop, give curling a shot in the beer garden at Kaiser Tiger. Or go iceless curling above Michigan Avenue on the rooftop rink at The Gwen Hotel. ICE SKATING Whether you’re a pro with your own ice skates or need to rent a pair, you can cut figure eights at several rinks around town. The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park has the city skyline and Cloud Gate (aka “The Bean”) as its stunning backdrop. Nearby, the Maggie Daley Park Skating Ribbon is a picturesque path that flows around rock climbing walls. The Rink at Gallagher Way turns the popular green space outside Wrigley Field into a winter wonderland. The Peninsula Sky Rink takes skating to new heights with a sweeping Magnificent Mile view. And the Midway Plaisance Ice Rink is a huge rink located in Hyde Park, near The University of Chicago. Most rinks open in November, but be sure to check individual rinks for hours and fees.
