Walk In The Footsteps Of Legends The Wild West town of Deadwood was born in 1876 when prospectors came across a gulch full of dead trees and a creek full of gold. Historic Deadwood is just as wild today as it was when legends like Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Seth Bullock roamed the streets. With modern-day casinos, full-service spas, big-name concerts and some of the best parties in the U.S., the city still knows how to have a good time. Discover the nooks and crannies of yesteryear on the citywide, self-guided walking tour — like the Victorian homes surrounding the downtown area and the magnificent exteriors of the grand brick structures along historic Main Street. Pick up the free brochure that accompanies the walking tour at the Deadwood Welcome Center. MUSEUMS Visit the Adams Museum, which preserves and displays the history of the Black Hills. Exhibits include some of the region’s greatest treasures, like Potato Creek Johnny’s massive gold nugget. Tour the Historic Adams House, an 1892 Queen Anne-style home restored as a house museum. It’s well known for its oak interiors, hand-painted canvas wall coverings, stained-glass windows, thoroughly modern 19th century plumbing and original furnishings. Walk through The Brothel Deadwood on a guided tour of the original site of the Shasta Rooms brothel. The rooms are curated with period-appropriate furnishings and tell the story of the brothels’ century-long history in Deadwood. Visitors must be at least 16 years old. THINGS TO DO Follow the path of ore cars deep underground into the century-old shafts of the Broken Boot Gold Mine. Walk in the footsteps of thousands of miners who sought their fortunes in the dark and explosive atmosphere of black powder and candlelight. Journey through an authentic Lakota encampment at Kevin Costner’s Tatanka: Story of the Bison, located a mile north of town. There you can view a larger-than-life bronze sculpture of 14 bison pursued by three Native American horseback riders. Catch a ride on The Original Deadwood Tour bus for a citywide tour. Learn about the complete Deadwood saga as you wind through side streets and do a low-gear climb to Mount Moriah Cemetery. During the summer months, reenactors perform free daily shows and shootouts along Main Street. In the evening, they perform the Trial of Jack McCall, a stage play based on the trial of Wild Bill’s murderer. Outlaw Square is Deadwood’s newest legendary year-round, family-friendly gathering space and entertainment venue. The lineup includes concerts, ice skating, history presentations, movie nights, craft fairs, holiday and sporting events and more. GAMING In Deadwood, you can be a player 24/7.
