“Never Forget Your Dreams®” Emerging from granite in the Southern Black Hills is Crazy Horse Memorial® — the world’s largest Mountain Carving in progress. The dream began in 1939 when Chief Henry Standing Bear invited sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to create a tribute to the North American Indians to show that “the red man has great heroes, also.” The first blast, June 3, 1948, ignited Ziolkowski’s commitment to his promise. After Ziolkowski passed, his wife Ruth took the reins. She advanced the mission of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation and directed the Memorial into a new era. Since Ruth’s passing, the family and the foundation have been dedicated to continuing the years-long dream and legacy of the sculptor and his wife. Admissions and contributions finance the Memorial, and they do not accept federal or state funding. The Memorial is open year round. THE MOUNTAIN A group of Mountain Crew members continues the work of carving the Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse, upon his steed. When completed, the granite sculpture will be 563 feet high and 641 feet long. The Mountain Crew is currently removing rock on Crazy Horse’s Left Hand, which will be about 25 feet tall. The extended left index finger, resting on the supporting horse’s mane, will be nearly 29.5 feet long. Other areas of focus are Crazy Horse’s Left Arm, his left knuckle area, the top of his head and hairline, and the horse’s mane. THINGS TO DO The Indian Museum of North America® and The Native American Educational and Cultural Center® house an extensive collection of art and artifacts and provide educational opportunities to enhance the experience. Throughout the summer, Native artists, performers and culture bearers share their knowledge and skill with visitors to the Memorial by offering a presentation about current cultural issues, traditions, and living heritage of North American Indians as part of the Talking Circle Speaker Series. Pique your curiosity at the Sculptor’s Home & Studio, filled with the sculptor’s projects. Dine at Laughing Water Restaurant with spectacular views of the Mountain Carving. SPECIAL EVENTS Twice a year, the Memorial holds ceremonial Night Blasts. See incredible fireballs and specially designed pyrotechnical features light up the Mountain June 26, 2021, and Sept. 6, 2021. For a remarkable experience join the Spring Volksmarch, June 5 to 6, 2021, or the Fall Volksmarch, Sept. 26, 2021. These 10K organized hikes bring you directly in front of the 9-story-high face of the carving. Legends in Light® laser-light show is held nightly at dark, May 28 through Sept. 6, 2021. The spectacular display turns the mountainside into a giant 500-foot screen. Colorful animations, sound effects and laser beams choreographed to music illuminate our cultural diversity, celebrate our similarities and encourage a better understanding and harmony among races and nations.
