GALLERIES & ANTIQUES New Orleans’ artsy vibe is alive at galleries throughout the city. See the works of many local artists and artisans in a single place at Dutch Alley Artist’s Co-op (in the French Market) and in the Arts District New Orleans (a collection of galleries on Julia Street). Galleries featuring the work of individual artists — such as Frank Relle Photography and George Rodrigue Studio — can be found in the French Quarter. Discover history that you can take home at one of our many local antique stores. M.S. Rau Antiques is arguably New Orleans’ most famous, and is in good company on Royal Street, the epicenter of antiques. Its neighbors include Keil’s Antiques (in business since 1899), Ida Manheim Antiques, Moss Antiques and Royal Antiques Ltd. THEATRICAL PERFORMANCES Bombastic, hilarious, thoughtful and moving — New Orleans’ performing arts scene packs an emotional punch. See what we mean by catching performances at the Contemporary Arts Center, Ashé Cultural Arts Center, Joy Theater, Orpheum Theater, Saenger Theatre and Southern Rep Theatre. OPERA & SYMPHONY America’s first opera house was in New Orleans, and its legacy lives on today through the New Orleans Opera Association, an organization that performs throughout the city at such venues as Le Petit Theatre and Mahalia Jackson Theater. The Mahalia Jackson Theater is also where you’ll find the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and New Orleans Ballet Association performing. NEW ORLEANS CULTURE New Orleans traditions come in many forms, and there seems to be a museum for many of them. Carnival floats for some of the biggest parades are made at Mardi Gras World. Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights is a showroom, museum and working factory where artisans hand-make exquisite gas lamps in front of visitors. Experience local African American culture and music at The Donald Harrison, Sr. Museum, the recently reopened New Orleans African American Museum, Le Musée de fpc, and everything else local from Voodoo (VooDoo Spiritual Temple) to medicine (New Orleans Pharmacy Museum). The diversity of these and other museums (too many to mention) speak to the uniqueness of New Orleans itself. ART MARKETS Many local artists display and sell works collectively at local markets. French Market, one of New Orleans’ most iconic destinations, features souvenirs, local cuisine and local artwork. Avant Garden District, a newer development, has works by upwards of 90 artists and food vendors. You can hear live music in the air at Palace Market, whose neighbors include some of Frenchmen Street’s finest concert venues. And finally, there are many weekly and monthly art fairs and markets, including Arts Market New Orleans, Freret Market and Magazine Street Art Market. Visit NewOrleans.com for more information on these businesses and their current post- Covid19 status.
