DIXIELAND, GYPSY JAZZ, TRADITIONAL JAZZ AND SWING Dixieland is the upbeat, clarinet-and-banjo cousin of ragtime, while old-time gypsy jazz features complex melodies played on hollow-body guitars. You’ll hear traditional jazz and swing music in dozens of New Orleans clubs. BRASS BAND Brass band music is traditional jazz’s funky, second line parade-marching cousin, featuring all manners of horns and drums. ZYDECO Louisiana’s Creoles invented this rollicking, bluesy cousin of Cajun music, where the accordion, fiddle and frottoir (washboard) take center stage — zydeco’s up-tempo beat is absolutely unmistakable. BLUES Got the blues? New Orleans sure does. You can hear the wailing, driving sounds of the Delta every night of the week in venues throughout town. ROCK AND POP New Orleans is a must-stop for rock bands touring the Southeast, and the city has plenty of venues for them and a strong roster of local bands on the rise.
