EXPLORE URBAN TRAILS

Pennsylvania’s urban trails combine the state’s natural, rugged beauty with history, art, and places only the locals know. In Philadelphia, the Circuit Trails spread hundreds of miles through the city and cross the Delaware River into New Jersey. Discover museums, restaurants, waterfronts, parks, and historic sites including Valley Forge as you walk, jog, or bike its routes. Iconic routes on the Circuit Trails include the Manayunk Bridge Trail and Schuylkill River Trail. The Capital Area Green Belt in Harrisburg loops 20 miles through wooded areas, past the Susquehanna River and through urban areas. Along the way, pause to reflect at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, which can only be accessed by the trail, and visit The Five Senses Gardens with its colorful flowers, perfumed blossoms, tactile plants, and labyrinth. Explore Pittsburgh’s riverfronts on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. The 24-mile non-linear trail has segments on both banks of the city’s three rivers — the Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela — and features interpretive signage that calls attention to significant places, historical events, and native wildlife. It’s also a hub for other trail systems including the Great Allegheny Passage and the Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail. On a visit to Bethlehem, don’t miss the South Bethlehem Greenway. The 3-mile trail follows the former Norfolk Southern rail line through the city’s South Side neighborhoods, passing a traditional Chinese pavilion, community garden, Bonn Place Brewing, and Native Blue Heron, a statue by Virginia Abbot. The Greater Erie Regional Trails provide scenic routes through the wooded areas surrounding Erie’s parks, waterfronts, and rural areas. Most of the multi-use trails are less than a mile long, and several are wheelchair accessible. Instagrammable trails include the 1.2- mile Wintergreen Gorge, which offers views of Four Mile Creek, and Lakeside Trail with views of Lake Erie. In York, the York County Heritage Rail Trail runs 21 miles to the Maryland- Pennsylvania border along the Northern Central Railway, an operational rail line. Walk, jog, bicycle, or horseback ride through the Howard Tunnel, stopping at the Hanover Junction and New Freedom train stations to learn about local history and the railroad. A gorgeous, sunny day along the multi-use Three Rivers Heritage Trail. Photo courtesy of @SHAINDLIN
