[ AFTER PAGE 64 ] RAIL TRAILS When the steel, coal, and iron industries were booming in Pennsylvania, trains were used to transport goods through the countryside. During the years, many of these railroad beds became vacant, and trails were developed in their place to commemorate the historical routes. Explore these routes on bike, foot, or even cross-country skis. Here are a few to get you started: THE GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE Considered to be one of the nation’s most popular rail-trails, the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage begins in Pittsburgh and crosses the border into Maryland. HERITAGE RAIL TRAIL COUNTY PARK Extending 21 miles through urban and rural landscapes, the Heritage Rail Trail County Park runs from York to the Mason-Dixon Line, offering views of historic structures along the way. DELAWARE AND HUDSON TRAIL (D&H TRAIL) This 38-mile D&H Trail stands in place of the historic Delaware and Hudson railroad, a small but vital rail line created during the 1800s. The multi-use trail runs for several miles along the Lackawanna River and alternates between tree-lined sections and open stretches. 186 TOTAL RAIL-TRAILS 2,099 MILES OF RAIL-TRAILS *as of December 2019, but projects are continually in the works
