WHAT TO SEE & DO Golden Gate Park, a 1,017-acre green rectangle on the city’s west side, is a destination that merits a full day of exploration. The adjacent Sunset District features a long, wide beach with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. • In the eastern end of the park is the Koret Children’s Quarter, with its restored 1914 carousel. • Farther west, two important museums flank the Music Concourse: the de Young Museum, in its compelling contemporary home, and the California Academy of Sciences, which includes a planetarium, aquarium, rainforest and more under one plant-covered roof. • Green thumbs should head to the San Francisco Botanical Garden and the historic Conservatory of Flowers. Or, enjoy a cup of matcha and light snacks in the tranquil Japanese Tea Garden. • The National AIDS Memorial Grove is dedicated to the millions of lives AIDS has affected. This beautiful, peaceful space is open for picnics and regularly hosts performing arts events and weddings. • On the park’s south side is the Sunset District, with its blocks of charming shops.
