With easy access to three airports, major highways and Metrorail – and a prime location right next door to our nation’s capital – visitors have plenty of ways to get to and around Fairfax County. * PLANES Fairfax County sits between two major airports – Washington Dulles International (IAD) in the west and Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) in the east – with Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI) only 45 miles away. With three great options, you can compare flights for both convenience and affordability. * TRAINS Amtrak offers passenger rail service between Union Station in Washington, DC and major eastern cities. The AutoTrain is available from Lorton, VA to Sanford, FL and you can take Amtrak’s Northeast Regional Line from parts of Southern Virginia straight to Fairfax County. Virginia Railway Express (VRE) also offers rail service with lines originating in Manassas and Fredericksburg. Both run to and from Union Station in DC, with five stops in Fairfax County. * AUTOMOBILES Four major interstates (I-66, I-95, I-395 and I-495) all run through Fairfax County. Plenty of parking, much of it free, is readily available. * BUSES The Fairfax Connector provides service from many Metrorail stations and major attractions including George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, Tysons Corner, Mosaic District, Reston Town Center and Springfield Town Center. * BIKES Northern Virginia is known for its bike trails, with more than 500 miles in Fairfax County alone. Explore quiet, tree-lined streets and trails using Fairfax County’s excellent interactive map of biking routes. Bike rentals are available through Capital Bikeshare. * METRORAIL & METROBUS There are 10 Metrorail stations within Fairfax County, many of which offer daily parking and bike racks. In 2020, Metro will expand, adding additional stops in Reston and Herndon, as well as a stop at Washington Dulles International Airport. Metrobus operates routes in many parts of Fairfax County and at all Metrorail stations.
