If you’re looking to pair your visit to the City by the Bay with some of California’s inspiring natural wonders, you’ll find plenty of choices for hiking, paddling, biking and more within a one- to three-hour drive. Here are a few ideas for fresh air and fun beyond San Francisco. Santa Cruz You can enjoy amazing views of a redwood forest from more than 100 feet in the air on the Redwood Canopy Tour at Mount Hermon Adventures in Felton, just north of Santa Cruz. The zipline course includes six lines that’ll give you a bird’s eye view of the towering trees. Or, if you’re in the mood for the beach, consider a lesson from one of the local surfing schools. If you can already catch waves, you’ll find board rentals, too, in case yours didn’t fit in the overhead bin. Monterey County One of the best ways to see local fauna is to grab a paddle and a kayak for a tour of Monterey Bay or Elkhorn Slough, where you’re likely to spot sea otters, sea lions and dozens of bird species. If you prefer fun on dry land, grab your hiking boots and head to Pinnacles National Park, where you can explore more than 30 miles of trails, with options for visitors of every skill level, and photo opportunities of the park’s distinctive rock formations. Yosemite National Park Waterfalls, giant sequoias and iconic cliffs like El Capitan are all waiting for you at one of the country’s most celebrated national parks. There are ample opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, skiing and rafting. If you want more than just natural beauty, there are guided hikes available (either custom or group) that can teach you about the history of the park and its ecosystems. Tuolumne County Not far from Yosemite is Tuolomne County, where you’ll find equally epic California landscapes with fewer crowds. The county maintains hundreds of miles of trails for mountain bikers of all skill levels, from familyfriendly paths to expert single-track rides. And if that’s not enough, the Stanislaus National Forest is home to even more trails, as well as some nice streams and swimming holes where you can cool your feet after a long day.
