BOULDER CITY
location: 40 minutes southeast
Escape to a desert playground where hiking, boating and aerial adventures await. Start your morning with a ziplining adventure by Flightlinez Bootleg Canyon or take a hike along the Historic Railroad Trail for views of Lake Mead. Get out on the water with a mid-day boat trip with Lake Mead Cruises. Learn about local history at the Hoover Dam Museum, and then take a guided tour of Hoover Dam for a behind-the-scenes look at an engineering marvel. For even more spectacular views, enjoy the bird’s eye vantage point with a ride over the dam with Sundance Helicopters. Then refuel with a stop by Fox Smokehouse BBQ for fall-off-the-bone barbecued meats and Southern-style sides.
LAKE LAS VEGAS
location: 35 minutes east
A manicured oasis of pristine golf courses, waterfront eateries and luxurious hotels, this picturesque lakeside retreat is a year-round escape. Play a round of golf at the Jack Nicklaus-designed course at Reflection Bay Golf Club, or unwind with a massage at Spa Ravella at Hilton Lake Las Vegas Resort & Spa. Take your pick from miles of snowshoeing trails throughout the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area or head over to Lee Canyon for skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. After a day of active pursuits, kick back and relax with a glass of wine and a hearty steak dinner at A Cut Above at The Resort on Mount Charleston.
MESQUITE
location: 80 minutes northeast
Desert adventures seamlessly pair with posh resorts at this city near the Nevada-Arizona border. Set up home base at the CasaBlanca Hotel, Casino, Golf & Spa or Eureka Casino Resort, and then take your pick from an array of activities, such as biking, hiking, golfing and ATV riding. Learn about local pioneer history at the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum, or peruse the art exhibits at Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery.
VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK
location: 60 minutes northeast
Water-carved canyons, dramatic vistas, ancient petroglyphs and multi-colored rock formations beckon for exploration at this scenic park. Go for an easy hike along the 1.3-mile Fire Wave Trail to see spectacular sandstone formations, or trek along the quick 0.75-mile, out-and-back Mouse’s Tank Trail to spot hundreds of petroglyphs. Just outside the park in nearby Overton, peruse prehistoric artifacts and Native American baskets, pottery and jewelry at Lost City Museum.
