HISTORIC FLORIDA GOLF COURSES LEGENDARY LINKS Golf is a modern Florida staple, but as these iconic courses show, its legacy goes back farther than you may know. 1 THE BILTMORE GOLF CLUB – CORAL GABLES (Southeast) Built in 1925, the Biltmore’s history includes a 36-hole exhibition match that pitted Bobby Jones and Tommy Armour against Gene Sarazen and Leo Diegel. Golfers today can walk in the footsteps of these legends while enjoying this spectacular course. A $2.5 million renovation to restore this course to its original grandeur took place in 2018. 2 PALATKA GOLF CLUB – PALATKA (Northeast) This Donald Ross-designed classic opened in 1926. Today, this vintage course prides itself on a track you can play quickly, enjoyably and inexpensively. Located near Ravine Gardens State Park, it has been a tranquil escape for nearly a century. 3 BABE ZAHARIAS GOLF COURSE – TAMPA (Central West) This course dates to 1926, but it really came to life in 1949, when renowned female golfer Babe Zaharias became the club’s winter golf pro, and then its owner. After her 1956 death, the course languished until 1974, when the City of Tampa reopened it and named it in her honor. 4 OCEAN COURSE AT PONTE VEDRA INN & CLUB – PONTE VEDRA BEACH (Northeast) Bobby Jones declared this “a course to challenge professionals” due to seabreezes and natural hazards. A 1947 redesign by Robert Trent Jones made play easier, but in 1998, Bobby Weed restored the course to its original glory. Today, it is one of the area’s top resort courses.
