With more than 2,500 miles of snowmobiling trails and a season that typically extends from mid-December through early April, Wyoming’s epic terrain begs adventurers to get their vroom on. SNOWY RANGE & SIERRA MADRES Annual snowfall of about 25 feet, snow-blanketed woods and hundreds of miles of groomed trails make the Snowy Range (nicknamed “the Snowies” by locals) and Sierra Madres in southern Wyoming a snowmobiling haven. Saratoga and Laramie are terrific home bases for sledheads looking to explore the renowned powder stashes. CONTINENTAL DIVIDE & WIND RIVER RANGE The Continental Divide is perfect for snowmobilers looking to blaze their own pathways in challenging terrain or survey the frosty wonderland with a guide. This trail system is the longest in the West, boasting 690 miles of groomed and 139 miles of ungroomed routes beginning in Lander and ending in Grand Teton National Park. Discover trailheads in Lander and Pinedale. WYOMING RANGE The Wyoming Range in the western portion of the state is another coveted cold-season playground. Get lost in hundreds of miles of both groomed and ungroomed trails reaching close to 10,000 feet in elevation with amazing views. Trailheads can be accessed from Pinedale, Big Piney, La Barge, Afton, Alpine and Kemmerer. BIGHORN MOUNTAINS & BLACK HILLS The Bighorn Mountains have a convenient trail system divided into north and south sections with 342 miles of groomed and 49 miles of ungroomed routes. Meanwhile, 55 miles of groomed trails make northeast Wyoming’s Black Hills a must-ride. Find access points and rentals in Sundance, Sheridan and Newcastle. CASPER MOUNTAIN Just minutes from downtown Casper, this 32-mile trail system is equipped with easy-to-follow directions and signage. Hop on at the Beartrap Meadow trailhead and follow tracks to Muddy Mountain for backcountry riding on snow depths of up to 3 feet. UINTA RANGE There are about 80 miles of groomed trails on the north slope of the Uinta Mountains and along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway, which is nestled at Wyoming’s southwest corner near Evanston and closed to vehicular traffic in the winter months. YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK See all the sights along the trails like geysers, frozen-in-time waterfalls and wildlife with an authorized commercial guide. Or a new regulation allows four unguided groups of up to five snowmobilers into the park each day with special permits awarded annually through a lottery system at recreation.gov.
