A Natural, National Treasure Like No Other
Colorado National Monument is 20,500 acres of stunning red rock monoliths, canyons, cliffs, winding trails and views. Established in 1911 by President Taft, at the urging of local citizens including John Otto, Colorado National Monument is the 25th unit of the National Park Service. The 23-mile Rim Rock Drive winds from one entrance to the other through beautiful scenery and spectacular views of Grand Junction below. Road bikers love the challenging climbs and descents, and hikers delight in the many scenic trails (please note, no mountain bikes or dogs on the trails). Serpents Trail and Devils Kitchen are short and wildly popular. Monument Canyon Trail takes you into the heart of the canyons. Keep an eye out for lizards, desert bighorn sheep and eagles. A campground and several picnic areas are available. Make a stop in the visitor center, located near the West Entrance, to talk with knowledgeable National Park Service Rangers.
