Baltimore is known for its art museums and their extraordinary collections. Both the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum have free regular admission. Live theater and ballet thrives in the region at performance centers like the Hippodrome, France Merrick Performing Arts Center, and the Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric, as well as at Annapolis’ Summer Garden Theatre and the Maryland Hall for Creative Arts. Once an old cotton mill where canvas was made for clipper ships, tents and the military during the Civil War and World Wars I and II, Historic Savage Mill is now filled with boutiques, antiques, and tasty restaurant offerings. Don’t miss the ghost tours in the fall.

14 Sip Wine in the Countryside
Maryland Wine Festival has been ripening since 1984, when Maryland’s grape growers and vintners gathered for the state’s first wine festival. Sample more than 200 of Maryland’s finest wines from 30-plus wineries at the mid-September festival. Enjoy crab cakes, oysters and other local delicacies, all while listening to jazz and rock music and exploring its idyllic venue, the Carroll County Farm Museum.
15 Party with the Ponies at Preakness
On the third Saturday of May, horse racing fans focus their eyes on the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course, with ladies in elaborate hats and gents clad in seersucker. The second leg of the Triple Crown includes a week of festivities leading up to the race, starting with a hot air balloon festival. Take in the sights and sounds as you sip the event’s official drink, a Black-eyed Susan (bourbon, vodka, orange liqueur, and pineapple, lime and orange juices), and experience the free spirited “InfieldFest” which features big name musical acts and other entertainment.
16 See Ships—and the Thunderbirds— at Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show
Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show Baltimore returns October 3-8. Dozens of visiting Naval vessels from the U.S. and Canada will be docked and available for boarding. The Air Force’s Thunderbirds will be taking to the skies over Baltimore and an Open House at Martin State Airport.
17 Light the Way at the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge
Explore the annual September challenge of visiting the lighthouses set in beautiful spots around the Chesapeake Bay with stops at Concord Point, Seven Foot Knoll, Lightship Chesapeake, Hooper Strait, Choptank River Replica, Drum Point, Cove Point, Piney Point, Point Lookout and Fort Washington. Each stop garners a complimentary souvenir; visit all the lights to receive a specially designed souvenir designating your accomplishment.
18 Find Big Fun at Baltimore’s Artscape
Artscape is America’s largest free arts festival, attracting more than 350,000 people over three days each July. Scores of artists, designers, craftspeople, musicians, dancers, singers and more provide entertainment by major national acts, exhibits and demonstrations.
19 Hang Out with Baa, Baa Black and White Sheep
The Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival in West Friendship at the Howard County Fairgrounds is the largest sheep and wool show in the country. The early May event features something interesting, exciting, and even unexpected at every turn. See fiber arts demonstrations, a Maryland Make It with Wool fashion show, lamb shearing, wool spinning, weaving, working sheep dogs, and sheep and goats of all breeds.
20 Witness Art and Light Come Together in an Illuminating Event
Light City is a unique series of free arts events and light-based installations, seminars, performances, music, and innovation throughout Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. In its third year, the nine-day event takes place in late March through early April.

21 Take in Small Town Waterfront Wonder
Havre de Grace, located at the mouth of the Susquehanna River near the top of Chesapeake Bay, is filled with rich history and unique finds. Numerous museums tell of the town’s connection to land and water. Public parks provide a picturesque setting and a way to relax and enjoy nature. Celebrate summer with a street party on the First Friday evening of the month from May through October, featuring food trucks, local vendors and entertainers. Side trip to the Conowingo Dam, just upriver, to see bald eagles and great blue herons fishing the swift waters of the Susquehanna. Rent a kayak and paddle from Susquehanna State Park down river to return to Havre de Grace.
22 Explore the Charming Town of Hampstead
This historic town in Carroll County offers a glimpse into the past. In Hampstead, which is more than 200 years old, there’s a classic Main Street, historic train station, and a War Memorial honoring veterans from World War I onwards. Take a walking tour of the town, and stop by the local boutiques and restaurants like Fratelli’s Italian Restaurant, Greenmount Station, and the ever-popular Hampstead Diner for interesting gifts and memorable meals.

Find One-of-a-Kind Charm in Ellicott City
Ellicott City in Howard County, an easy drive from Baltimore, was founded in 1772 and is filled with brilliant restaurants, hand-crafted beer, and delightful shops and boutiques. The town was devastated in a July 2016 storm that ravaged the historic Main Street business district. The invincible town was restored and rebuilt, and once again welcomes you. Start at the Welcome Center in the old post office on Upper Main Street for a selection of brochures and exhibits about the town and the area. Then, explore the past at the B&O Railroad Station Museum, the Ellicott City Colored School, the Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park, Firehouse Museum and Thomas Isaac Log Cabin (all are open April through November on weekends from 1 to 4 p.m.). The town is known to have enough ghosts to warrant a ghost tour. Complete your day with exquisite eats at the numerous chef-owned restaurants.
