IN THE SALT TO STONE REGION 1 MARVEL AT THE WHITE MOUNTAIN PETROGLYPHS Wyoming’s Red Desert Located approximately 26 miles northeast of Rock Springs, the White Mountain Petroglyphs is one of the state’s premier rock-art sites. Examine stone etchings of figures portraying bison and elk hunts, geometric forms and tiny footprints — all etched into the stone some 200 to 1,000 years ago. 2 CHECK OUT THE MOUNTAIN MAN, NATIVE AMERICAN AND MINING ARTIFACTS AT THE FOSSIL COUNTRY FRONTIER MUSEUM Kemmerer This museum hosts a collection of natural and cultural materials representative of the history-rich area. A sampling of permanent exhibits includes the original J.C. Penney, bootlegging stills and wine presses, and a replica coal mine. 3 DRIVE THE PILOT BUTTE WILD HORSE SCENIC LOOP TOUR Between Rock Springs and Green River The Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop is a 24-mile-long, hard-packed gravel road that passes in front of the Pilot Butte rock formation and overlooks the town of Rock Springs. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot the pack of the wild horses that roam the area, but even if you don’t, the stunning scenery is worth the drive. 4 SOAK IN THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE GREEN RIVER LAKES Near Pinedale A pair of sparkling green-blue lakes in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, Green River Lakes boasts awe-inspiring vistas of the Wind River Range’s photogenic 11,695-foot Squaretop Mountain. Hike a portion of the 35-mile Highline Trail and observe moose, elk, pikas and other animals that roam the area. 5 HIKE THROUGH SEEDSKADEE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Green River Protecting approximately 27,230 acres of riparian, wetland and upland shrub habitats along the Green River, the refuge could easily set the scene for a perfect nature walk. Count how many bird species you see (there are 220), and keep an eye out for bald eagles, trumpeter swans, moose, mule deer and white-tailed jackrabbits. 6 CRUISE THE WYOMING CENTENNIAL SCENIC BYWAY Near Jackson & Teton Village This is one of the best ways to take in many icons as the byway connects Pinedale and Jackson and continues on to Dubois in the Rockies to Tetons region. Drive through the Gros Ventre Wilderness and along the Snake River to encounter photo-worthy panoramas of the jagged Teton Mountains.
