Pennsylvania’s numerous underground treasures reveal stunning natural wonders and adventures that the whole family can enjoy, offering everything from boat tours to rappelling. Penn’s Cave, Centre Hall Water plays an important role at Penn’s Cave in Centre Hall — not only has dripping water sculpted a multitude of glittering stalactites and stalagmites, an underground stream is the setting for a motorboat tour to view shapes like “The Statue of Liberty.” Located near Hummelstown, Indian Echo Caverns boasts limestone that is more than 440 million years old. Room after room of geological marvels, intimate passageways, and a crystalclear lake are part of the fantastic experience. After the tour, try your luck panning for gemstones at Gem Mill Junction. You’ll find the largest cave in the state at Laurel Caverns Park outside of Hopwood. Ceilings average 10 to 20 feet in height throughout the three-mile labyrinth, though some are as tall as 50 feet. For an extra thrill, opt to rappel 45 feet from a cliff within the cave. Lost River Caverns, Hellertown Five spectacular chambers of eye-catching crystal formations await at Hellertown’s Lost River Caverns, including one that is now known as the Crystal Chapel. In the late 1800s, locals built a wooden dance floor for social gatherings; later it was used as a chapel for ceremonies between 1949 and 2009. Head 125 feet underground to see Crystal Cave’s natural stone sculptures, with names like “The Prairie Dogs” and “The Totem Pole.” Originally discovered in 1871 near Kutztown, these days it’s known for an abundance of formations that can be viewed on educational tours. Witness massive flowstones and pure-white calcite at a pair of spectacular crystal caverns in Huntingdon: Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks. After a visit, hike the surrounding nature trails for a peek at local wildlife such as turkeys, hawks, and deer. QUICK TIP: A steady temperature of 52 degrees in most caverns is a welcome respite from summertime heat, but be sure to bring a light jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes with good tread.
