Bike the 70-mile Lackawanna River Heritage Trail spanning Pittston and the New York border to see how remnants of industry share the healing landscape with river views, lush greenery, and wildlife. Or, grab a few pals for foam combat sports with weapons of foam-covered PVC and fiberglass during Dagorhir’s Son of the Sac weekend events at the EMR Paintball Park in New Milford. ARTS & CULTURE SEEKER: See the Broadway Theatre League perform “Cinderella” and “Pippin,” take in a Wiggles & Giggles children’s show at the neo-gothic Scranton Cultural Center, or explore its many rooms on a scavenger hunt tour. Experience the music of the masters as only a live orchestra can deliver it with classical and popthemed concerts at the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic in Scranton. Take in a show and soak in the playful, elegant Art Deco style of the restored F. M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in Wilkes-Barre. HISTORY BUFF: Cross the 1860 Knapp’s Covered Bridge in Towanda and look for prominent bridge builder Theodore Burr’s hallmark — two long arches sandwiching a multikingpost structure. Tour Wilkes-Barre’s Frederick Stegmaier Mansion, the circa 1870 Victorian jewel that was home to the son of a famous brewer. Ride a steam locomotive at Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, and see the shop of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. At the Nathan Denison House in Forty Fort learn about a Wyoming Valley settler who in 1790 built his dwelling on Abrams Creek. Scranton Iron Furnaces GO FOR THE ... STORIES FROM THE PAST Some Anthracite Region immigrants were unskilled peasants and others were skilled workers. All had stories. Learn about them at Scranton’s Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum. At Scranton Iron Furnaces, four massive stone blast furnaces remain of an operation that poured 125,000 tons of pig iron in 1880. EVENTS 47TH ANNUAL ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL Aug. 12–13, 2017 Come out and enjoy the mountain air, live entertainment and great food while shopping for those special items available for sale on the village green in Eagles Mere. Also, stop in the shops, the Eagles Mere Museum, and the Sweet Shop while you’re in town. PITTSTON TOMATO FESTIVAL Aug. 18–21, 2017 The festival will include delicious food, live entertainment, a parade, 5K run, games, rides, arts and crafts, bingo, and homegrown Pittston tomatoes. PENNSYLVANIA BOWHUNTERS FESTIVAL Sept. 15–17, 2017 The three-day event in Forksville offers a wide variety of shooting activities and events designed to prepare bowhunters for the upcoming archery season. APPLE ‘N CHEESE FESTIVAL Oct. 7–8, 2017 From chainsaw carving and free entertainment to apple butter making and wine and cheese tasting, this festival in Canton is the largest show of its kind. CHRISTMAS IN OUR HOMETOWN @ TUNKHANNOCK Dec. 1–21, 2017 Street carolers, hot chocolate, a visit from Santa, and a host of other holiday festivities await visitors as they wander through picturesque Tunkhannock.
