Wright At Home In Pennsylvania

2017-03-16 06:52:35

Who doesn’t love a dish of ice cream on a hot summer’s day? Pennsylvania Vanilla is just one of the flavors produced by the Hagan Ice Cream Company of Uniontown. While I.N. and Bernardine Hagan, the founders of the company, were first known for crafting tasty frozen treats they would make a lasting contribution to the state’s collection of cultural treasures when they selected Frank Lloyd Wright to design their Chalk Hill home, Kentuck Knob. The Hagans were friends with Edgar and Liliane Kaufmann of the legendary Pittsburgh department store, whose former home is one of the most famous in the world, the unrivaled Fallingwater. This year we are celebrating the 150th birthday of the famed architect by highlighting his Pennsylvania creations that attract thousands each year. With an artist, an architect, and a geologist in our family, we all garner inspiration from the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. To commemorate the anniversary, Fallingwater visitors will be greeted by a special exhibit “Wright for Wright,” about the homes Wright designed for himself and how he used each to explore new ideas that would inspire his other works. This year we also acknowledge the 100th birthday of renowned artist Andrew Wyeth of Chadds Ford, Delaware County. Andrew is a member of the celebrated Wyeth family, which includes his father N.C. Wyeth, sister Carolyn, and son Jamie. To mark the anniversary, the Brandywine River Museum of Art will present “Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect,” June 24, 2017 to September 17, 2017, an exhibit including over 100 pieces of his works. It will explore how the artist’s work evolved and connected him more fully to traditions in American and European art. These anniversaries top off an exceptional must experience list in the commonwealth this year. We will also celebrate the opening of the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, the addition of the Triple Tower ride at Hersheypark, and welcome back the main fountain at Longwood Gardens after an extensive renovation. Set to be unveiled are major expansions at Waldameer Water World in Erie and the waterpark at the Kalahari Resort in the Pocono Mountains; while Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in the Laurel Highlands will add a second David Dye designed golf course, Shepherd’s Rock. Inspiration: it’s a quality that shaped both Wright and Wyeth and a gift they continue to provide for all of us. What inspires you? No matter if it’s the arts, history, or outdoor adventure, I invite you to come celebrate with us and pursue your happiness in Pennsylvania. Tom Wolf, Governor
