South Dakota stout Craft beer has a story. It’s written by folks with the passion to start a brewery and the dedication to master the craft. Whether you’re a beer aficionado, or just curious to taste what’s out there, the emerging micro-breweries of the Black Hills have you covered. Miner Brewing Company in Hill City is a creation from the owners of award-winning Prairie Berry Winery. The brewery produces craft beers that are traditional in nature, highlighted with local and regional ingredients to make them distinctively “South Dakota.” The brewery seats 30 people inside the taproom, with a large Beer Garden outside for seating an additional 85 people. The atmosphere is complete with live entertainment and friendly service. The Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company, located in downtown Custer, is the newest addition to the Black Hills brewery scene. Their focus is on bringing local, handcrafted artisanal ales and brewery inspired food to the Custer area. Their split-level setup has their taproom on the first floor (featuring a direct-draw tap system of 24 rotating taps) and a full-service restaurant on the second floor. Sick-N-Twisted Brewing Company serves 18 in-house brews using local ingredients out of Hill City’s Naked Winery. The relaxing patio and fireplace offer a great venue to relax with friends and family. Crow Peak Brewing Company, located in Spearfish, is the region’s critically acclaimed microbrewery. Many local restaurants and bars offer this award-winning brewery’s beers on-tap, and you will notice a variety of their craft beer available in cans throughout the Hills. Hay Camp Brewery opened its doors in downtown Rapid City in 2014. Inspired by the early history of Rapid City, originally named “Hay Camp,” the tavern décor reflects the cultural roots of Rapid City’s developmental era. The tavern seats about 25 customers and features a handful of seasonally rotating taps. The Knuckle Brewing Company in Sturgis has been brewing beers beyond their years and is certainly worth sampling during your visit. Other local breweries include Firehouse Brewing Company and the Lost Cabin Brewing Company, both located in Rapid City.
