THE BLACK HILLS’ HIDDEN JEWEL OF NATURE “Unique and unparalleled elsewhere in our country.” Those were the words used by America’s greatest architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, when he visited Spearfish Canyon in September 1935. Wright’s journey through the canyon was made along a particularly rugged trail that followed a railroad track recently abandoned by the Burlington Railroad. By 1950, the trail had been transformed into a smoothly paved roadway, and today Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (US Hwy 14A) offers its spectacular views to the driving public year-round. The byway runs from Spearfish to Cheyenne Crossing, a historic stage stop about eight miles southwest of Lead. Spearfish Canyon The always-enjoyable drive of 19 miles either begins or ends in one of the most pleasant examples of smalltown USA: the town of Spearfish, nestled in a broad valley on the northern edge of the Black Hills. Spearfish Canyon has it all – rugged cliffs, sparkling Spearfish Creek, a rich landscape dominated by pine, spruce, aspen and birch stands, and three waterfalls. Hike or drive to Roughlock Falls State Nature Area, a perfect blend of natural beauty and man-made viewing spots. The walkways offer easy access to this wonderland, culminating in the view of Roughlock Falls – a sylvan forest masterpiece. Emerge yourself in the beauty with a stay at one of the canyon’s multiple lodge or cabin accommodations. To experience a historic stay in the Canyon, plan a night or two in a log cabin at either Rim Rock Lodge, one of the oldest resorts in the Northern Black Hills, or Wickiup Village Cabins, nestled on the banks of Spearfish Creek. Spearfish Canyon Lodge offers comfortable accommodations year-round. Located in the middle of the scenic byway, it’s an ideal stay for those who want to explore the many nearby trails either by foot, or in the snowy months, by snowmobile.
