A BEAUTIFUL WALK, HIKE & RIDE George S. Mickelson Trail Stretching 109 miles from Deadwood in the north to Edgemont in the southwest, the George S. Mickelson Trail has become known far and wide for the high-quality bicycling it offers. If you don’t bring your own bicycle, you can rent one (or many) from DeadWheels Bicycle Rentals in Deadwood. They will even drop you off and pick you up along the trail! But it isn’t only bicyclists that find the trail the perfect outdoor adventure. You can also hike, ride horseback, or cross-country ski the trail. There are many trail rides that take advantage of this gorgeous scenery. With a surface of primarily crushed limestone and gravel, the trail currently has 15 trailheads which all offer parking, self-sale trail pass stations ($4 daily or $15 annual), vault toilets and tables. The trail is about 10 feet wide and traverses the full range of what nature in the Black Hills has to offer: prairie, mountains, aspen lined creeks, pine forests, high country meadows and the wildlife that lives in each of these diverse ecosystems. If one day just isn’t enough, make arrangements to stay at any one of the numerous lodging options located along the trail, including Alice’s Black Hills Cottage on the Mick and Mickelson Trail Lodging. Keep these rules in mind before you hit the trail: dogs must be leashed; motorized vehicles are not allowed; smoking is prohibited; discharging a firearm from or across the trail is not allowed; the trail is closed from dusk to dawn; bicyclists must yield to pedestrians; and, horses have the ultimate right-of-way. Bicycle enthusiasts should consider participating in the Mickelson Trail Trek, a three-day celebration held annuall during the 3rd weekend in September.
