Florida Tolls: What You Need to Know In 2011, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise began a gradual conversion of turnpike toll plazas from traditional cash collection to all-electronic, open road tolling. The project began with the southern 47 miles of Florida’s Turnpike in Miami- Dade County. Already complete are the Golden Glades interchange in northern Miami-Dade County, the Sawgrass Expressway in Broward County and the Veterans Expressway in Hillsborough County. This new system will eliminate the need for drivers to stop at toll plazas. Cash collection booths are being removed and replaced with overhead readers and cameras that will scan for SunPass transponders and license plates. The new system is considered safer, more convenient and more efficient. For drivers who encounter these new toll plazas and don’t have a SunPass, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has established a collection system called “TOLL-BY-PLATE.” Cameras take a picture of the license plates of vehicles without a SunPass. The plate is matched to the vehicle’s registered owner, and a bill is sent for the toll, plus a monthly administrative charge. To avoid this charge, drivers can purchase a SunPass.
