The county is the region’s business and technology hub, and for visitors, that translates into exciting new developments in attractions and transportation each year. Isabella Eatery FOOD & DRINK Isabella Eatery Coming to Tysons Galleria in 2017, Isabella Eatery is an unprecedented new dining experience created by awardwinning D. C. chef and restaurateur Mike Isabella. The 41,000-square-foot food emporium will feature nine distinctive eateries, including variations on established brands as well as several new concepts, and a Prohibition-style classic cocktail bar. Tysons’ Biergarten Embracing a heritage of 400 years of Bavarian beer halls and beer gardens (biergartens), Tysons’ Biergarten offers some of Germany and Belgium’s finest beers, along with delicious sausages: bratwursts, knockwurst, and the like. Caboose Brewing Company Award-Winning County Breweries Fairfax County is home to almost a dozen breweries who make their beer onsite for you to enjoy. At the 2016 Virginia Craft Beer Cup Awards, Fair Winds Brewing Company, Caboose Brewing Company, and Lake Anne Brew House were all recognized as some of the Commonwealth’s best. Lake Anne Brew House Winery Awards Fairfax County’s two wineries, Paradise Springs Winery and The Winery at Bull Run, were both recognized as gold medalists at several prestigious events in 2016. HISTORY & HERITAGE Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. It became the 19th, and newest, museum of the Smithsonian Institution when it opened its doors to the public on the National Mall in Washington, DC in late 2016. Lives Bound Together: Slavery at George Washington’s Mount Vernon This new exhibit, open through September 2018, explores the personal stories of the people enslaved at Mount Vernon while providing insight into George Washington’s evolving opposition to slavery. Through household furnishings, art works, archaeological discoveries, documents, and interactive displays, the exhibition demonstrates how closely intertwined the lives of the Washingtons were with those of the enslaved. The National Museum of the United States Army The Army Museum has broken ground! In late 2016 a ground-breaking ceremony was held at Fort Belvoir to mark the location of the long-awaited National Museum of the U.S. Army. The museum will be a national landmark to honor America’s soldiers, preserve the service’s history, educate visitors and serve as a dedicated and central spot for soldiers, veterans and their families to reflect and commemorate the shared experience of the Army community. The museum is expected to open in 2019. MILESTONES 75th Anniversary of WWII December 2016 marked the 75th Anniversary of the United States entering into WWII. For the next four years, area museums and attractions will conduct special programs and exhibits that touch on the local impact the war had on our citizens, and the nation as a whole. Fairfax County’s 275th Anniversary Native Americans, founding fathers, soldiers, slaves, and citizens all make up the fascinating history of Fairfax County, a history that closely mirrors the history of the United States of America. In June 2017, the county celebrates this history with an all-day celebration surrounding the courthouse complex that once housed George Washington’s will. Capital Bikeshare GETTING AROUND Capital Bikeshare This revolutionary bikesharing system has arrived in Fairfax County as Tysons and Reston have added a total of 30 new stations with more than 220 bikes for 2017.
