The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is stunning year-round, but the really hot ticket comes when the fall foliage bursts with color along the route. The historic steam engine runs from Cumberland to Frostburg, a perfect day trip for train-obsessed kids (and adults), or nature lovers of any age. Engineers and conductors are happy to share their knowledge of this cherished old train. The scenic railroad recently added dining cars to the line, perfect for relaxing and rolling through the stunning landscape.

Youghiogheny River Rafting
The Youghiogheny (pronounced yawk-a-GAINee) River, cutting through the far northwest corner of the state, is Maryland’s only Class IV and V white-water rafting river. Part of the “Yough” was designated a scenic and wild river, preserving the corridor around it in its natural state. Some parts, such as the stretch leading to Friendsville, could require an experienced river hand to show the way; several area guide companies lead excursions.

This long-standing music festival packs performances by dozens of local, regional and national blues artists into four soulful days. Kids get their own jam session plus activities like barrel cart rides and crafts.
5 Learn About Appalachian Culture
Frostburg State University hosts the Appalachian Festival in fall, celebrating music, art, dance, food and culture, with symposiums and film screenings highlighting the history, present day and future of Appalachia and the people who live there.

6 Strut Your Stuff at the Mummers Parade
The Alsatia Club in Hagerstown has been putting on its October Mummers Parade for almost a century. Recent parades have featured as many as 10,000 participants, making it the largest nighttime parade on the East Coast.
7 See (or Be) an Artisan at Work
Watch master weaver Ann Jones use a variety of looms and fibers, including her own handspun and dyed wools, to weave contemporary and historic forms before heading over to see award-winning whittler Gary Yoder, the village’s master bird sculptor whose creations have appeared at the Smithsonian Institute.
8 Shoot the Rapids at Adventure Sports Center International
Adventure Sports Center International sits at the top of Wisp Mountain, a 1,700-foot-long whitewater course built to host Olympic events. The course is actually adjustable—the speed and amount of water can be changed—to accommodate everyone from old river hands to casual adventuring families. The center also offers hiking and climbing, if you want to enjoy the land side.
9 Walk the Crossroads of History at Antietam National Battlefield
Come witness the rolling hills, idyllic streams and bucolic forests, which give no sign of the blood that was shed on the single deadliest day of fighting in American history.
10 Hike the Eastern Continental Divide
This rugged seam formed where North America’s continental plates are pulling apart, making for some of the most intriguing geology and challenging hiking around. With beautiful views of the Savage River Forest, Big Savage Mountain, Meadow Mountain and New Germany Lake in New Germany State Park, hiking the Eastern Continental Divide in Garrett County is a must for everyone.
11 Tour the Antietam Highlands Wine Trail
Meandering through the rolling hills and mountains of Western Maryland, crisscrossing five national parks, ten state parks, and one of the most important fronts of the Civil War, the Antietam Highlands Wine Trail is home to five of Maryland’s premiere wineries.
12 See Beautiful Fall Foliage at the Autumn Glory Festival
Each fall the forests of Western Maryland produce a mindboggling array of color, and a single visit may not be enough to capture the season’s splendor, but if you can only make one trip, come during Oakland’s annual Autumn Glory Festival. The five-day festival, celebrating 50 years in 2017, offers foliage tours, parades, music, dance competitions, art exhibits, local crafts and even a car show.
13 Hit the Slopes at Wisp Resort
The region’s premier ski resort offers 32 downhill slopes and trails, terrain parks, a snow tubing park, an ice skating rink, and a Mountain Coaster.
The Nordic center is home to cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and a slope-side hotel. During the summer, enjoy pontoon boat tours, mountain bike rentals, two golf courses, scenic chairlift rides and more.

Deep Creek has year-round activities for the whole family. Boating, swimming and fishing are all on the itinerary for the warmer months, while ice-fishing and dog sledding round out the winter months. Nearby Wisp Resort offers ski trails and snowboarding terrain parks, plus a mountain coaster, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing—and shopping and dining for those not inclined to schuss down a mountain. The resort’s hotel offers upscale accommodations, and there are many other options from camping and cabins to lodges and vacation homes. For a unique, eco-friendly vacation, Blue Moon Rising rents an assortment of small cabins at its site on the lake, built and managed with an eye to sustainable practices, as well as community buildings for group get-togethers.
