Discover the legacies of some of the Wild West’s most infamous characters in cities throughout the Black to Yellow region. SUNDANCE Harry Longabaugh, better known as the Sundance Kid, received his famous nickname after a prison stint in Sundance for stealing horses and was a member of Butch Cassidy’s famous Wild Bunch Gang. Sit in a spectator chair at a recreated scene from the Sundance Kid’s 1887 trial (complete with a judge and authentic courtroom furnishings), and view other displays about frontier living. BUFFALO BILL’S IRMA HOTEL, FLICKR/97423979@N00 KAYCEE Not much has changed at Hole-in-the-Wall near Kaycee, where Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch Gang hid from posses in the late 1800s. See where the gang planned their next moves on the rugged, red sandstone slope, and stay at Willow Creek Ranch, where you can picnic beneath the old cottonwoods and cool your heels in Buffalo Creek, another one of the outlaws’ hangouts. CODY The rough-and-tumble West lives on at Old Trail Town in Cody, where you can see the original cabins used by the Wild Bunch Gang and an 1888 Wyoming saloon the bandits frequented (be sure to count the bullet holes in the door). Other historic gems in Cody include Buffalo Bill’s Irma Hotel and its outdoor gunfight shows and the antique-packed 1920s-era Cassie’s Supper Club. KING’S SADDLERY, WYOMING OFFICE OF TOURISM. BUFFALO Established in 1880, the Occidental Hotel was frequented by many notorious characters, including Cassidy; Tom Horn, a cattle detective and gunman-for-hire; and Frank Canton, one of the area’s legendary sheriffs and gunslingers. Cozy up to the hotel’s 25-foot bar, where desperados, cowboys and lawmen mingled and bullet holes still pepper the ceiling. SHERIDAN Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Sheridan’s picture-perfect Main Street takes visitors back to a wilder time. Take the historic walking tour to see the 1893 Sheridan Inn’s front porch, where Buffalo Bill held auditions for his famous “Wild West Show,” and the Rainbow Bar, once operated by a “business woman” in one of the world’s oldest professions.
