The cool waters of the North Platte River near Casper murmur and glisten between wide, rocky banks, making adventure-hungry trout fishers practically salivate. That’s because the river boasts two legendary, blue-ribbon tail waters: The Miracle Mile and Grey Reef sections consistently produce trophy rainbows, browns and cutthroats. What sets these sections of the North Platte apart from other fishing destinations? “That tug on the line when a monster trout bites the hook. WY INDEED: LOCALS' TIPS FOR FISHING THE MILE Because of its status as a spawning ground, be careful not to walk through "the redds" (spawning areas) or you could disturb or destroy the eggs. The Mile is relatively remote. Bring everything you might need with you. Weather can be unpredictable. Dress in layers and bring waterproof outerwear. When wading, be careful not to slip on the algae-covered rocks on the riverbed. Fishing can be good virtually any time of year here, but is especially great when rainbows spawn in the spring and browns spawn in the fall.
