Buffalo still roam in Custer State Park, one of the last truly wild places in the West. Take this loop through the park for a close-up look at these burly beasts and other wild creatures, from speedy pronghorn antelopes to friendly (and hungry!) burros.

Custer State Park Visitor Center

As you begin your drive, stop here for travel tips, information on park history and to hear from staff on where the bison are roaming.

Lodge Areas

Extend your visit with an overnight stay in a log cabin or lodge room at the stunning State Game Lodge, built in 1920. Further along the loop, Blue Bell Lodge, Legion Lake Lodge and Sylvan Lake Lodge offer more places to stay and all-day bites (spring through fall).

Bison Center

Here you can learn about the park’s numerous bison and their history. Visit the corrals where they’re herded during the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup, held annually the last Friday in September.

Mount Coolidge Lookout Tower

Head to this still-operating fire lookout for panoramic views of the Black Hills. Disclaimer: The road to the tower may not be suitable for low-clearance cars and RVs.

Hiking Trails

Trek along the Centennial, Lover’s Leap and Prairie trails for views of incredible rock formations like the Cathedral Spires.

Caves

Just beyond Custer State Park are two wondrous caves that would make a great next leg of your drive: Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument.

Animal Etiquette 

Wild encounters are common in the 605 state, especially in Custer State Park. Always drive slowly, stop for crossing wildlife and give critters plenty of personal space.
