It’s hard to hone in on just a few new things to see, do and eat in San Francisco. Nevertheless, we’ll try. Here’s what’s new and different for 2019. 1 The 2019 NBA season is the first that the Golden State Warriors play in their new San Francisco home, the Chase Center. Located in the up-and-coming Dogpatch neighborhood just south of SoMa, the Chase Center is a state-of-theart arena used for concerts and special events as well as basketball games. More than three acres of new waterfront green space is being developed alongside it, which makes the Chase Center a neighborhood hotspot even when the Warriors are on the road. 2 The Chase Center isn’t the only new venue in town. In 2019, we cut the ribbon on the newly remodeled and expanded Moscone Center, San Francisco’s largest convention venue. Home to a number of annual events open to the public, including the San Francisco International Auto Show, the updated and upgraded Moscone Center features green spaces and gleaming light art installations that can be enjoyed by anyone. 3 The Moscone Center is also the permanent home of San Francisco Travel’s new flagship Visitor Information Center. This bright, streetlevel space is your go-to spot for purchasing attraction passes, booking excursions beyond the bridges, and getting inside tips on how to best experience the city from our friendly, local staff. 4 Two Broadway blockbusters will play San Francisco in 2019. First, Hamilton returns to SHN’s Orpheum Theater in February. It’s a homecoming of sorts, as the Tony Award-winning musical launched its first national tour here in 2017. In the fall, the Curran will be the first American theater outside New York to stage Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, one of Broadway’s hottest tickets since, well, Hamilton. 5 Two of San Francisco’s most family-friendly museums celebrate big anniversaries in 2019. The Exploratorium turns 50 this year. To celebrate its tradition of innovation and curiosity, their summer exhibition will be a provocative examination of identity, confronting the timeless question, “Who am I?” Over in the Presidio, the Walt Disney Family Museum celebrates its tenth year with special programming, including an examination of the worldwide impact of Walt’s most famous creation, Mickey Mouse. 6 As more visitors come to San Francisco, more hotels are being built to host them. Among this year’s debuts is the Grand Hyatt at San Francisco International Airport. This hotel features 350 guest rooms, ample meeting space, and convenient connections to airport terminals as well as BART, which can get visitors downtown in about 30 minutes.
