Dear Friends,
As a lifelong Marylander—and now as Governor—I’ve traveled all across the state and experienced the wonder that Maryland has to offer. Whether you’re a history buff, an art aficionado, a sports enthusiast, or a culinary connoisseur, there’s something for you in Maryland. I’m excited to share with you the 2017 Destination Maryland and highlight some of the exciting events happening throughout the year, as well as help you plan your next adventure in Maryland.
The new Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center, opening in March 2017, is one of the many important historical sites in our state. The park, commemorating the life of a Maryland native who changed the course of history, is the highlight of the 125-mile Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. This driving tour along the Chesapeake Bay and throughout Maryland’s Eastern Shore retraces the places and events that helped shape Tubman’s life.
For those interested in the arts, there’s plenty to see and do. At venues throughout the state, music lovers can enjoy every type of music, from ethnic and folk to jazz, blues and rock. The DelFest bluegrass festival is one of a host of music festivals held across Maryland. The nation’s largest free arts festival, Baltimore’s Artscape, showcases artists, fashion designers, sculptors and more. World-class museums like the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, the Walters Art Museum, and the Baltimore Museum of Art feature the works of Old Masters. At the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, the vision and talent of Lemuel and Stephen Ward live on, and the heritage of maritime communities is commemorated. Self-taught artistry is highlighted in the unique American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore.
Outdoor adventurers have an array of activities to choose from. Within just a few hours’ drive, visitors can ski, snowboard and sled in the mountains of Western Maryland or sunbathe, swim and sail on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay or the Atlantic Ocean.
Nature enthusiasts can hike the trails in Catoctin Mountain State Park, or camp on the beach at Assateague State Park.
Experience a taste of Maryland with more than 70 wineries, 50 craft breweries, and nearly 20 distilleries across the state, which provide tasting experiences for every palate. And no visit to Maryland is complete without sampling some of our legendary seafood and steamed blue crabs.
