Everyone is just dying to come to Louisiana, one of America’s most haunted states. No matter where you go in the Bayou State, you’re never quite alone. For instance, Loyd Hall near Alexandria claims to be haunted by the ghost of a Confederate spy. Myrtles Plantation near St. Francisville, is home to Chloe, the one-eared slave girl. And many River Road plantations, including the famous Oak Alley, are filled with ghostly guests who checked in, but never checked out. Baton Rouge is a must for ghost busters as well. The 13th Gate—a 40,000 square foot haunted house—is a scream. And you might bump into the spirit of Huey Long at the Old State Capitol. Shreveport’s Municipal Auditorium ranks among Louisiana’s most beloved music venues. It’s also one of its most haunted—so haunted, in fact, that it’s been investigated on the television show Ghost Hunters. In New Orleans, learn all about Marie Laveau on Free Tours by Foot’s New Orleans Voodoo Tour. Or stroll the French Quarter at night with the Voodoo Bone Lady, a practicing psychic and Voodoo priestess. And don’t leave the state without exploring our “cities of the dead” at one of New Orleans’ aboveground cemeteries. Louisiana is also home to several annual spooky events. In October, head out to the Rougarou Fest in Houma. In Cajun legend, the Rougarou is a werewolf-like beast who lurks in the bayous. And the Zombie Apocalypse happens every October in Folsom—come hungry! There are many more stories — ghost and otherwise — to tell.
