Glorious mountains that fade into the distance and the winding Susquehanna River define the landscape in this scenic region. Old steel mills, covered bridges, and behemoth mansions are reminders of the region’s storied past. Rebirth is well underway in places that were former industrial centers, where longstanding buildings are finding new lives as museums, colleges, and hotels. Color and creativity bloom in small-town art galleries, historic cultural centers, and grand theaters. Explore wineries and breweries, and take in the charms of quaint towns. 10 HAPPY MOMENTS Soak tired muscles in the hot tub at Stone Bridge Inn & Restaurant in Union Dale after an invigorating day on the trails. Wood post and beam architecture distinguish the restaurant and tavern. See a Native American chief statue carved from a single red oak by local artist Tom Austin, watching over the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail in Scranton, which stretches 40 miles along the river. Streams scour the bedrock cliffs and tubs — potholes created by glacial meltwater — at Seven Tubs Natural Area in Wilkes-Barre. Glimpse some after a short walk or see all of them on a two-mile hike. Dr. Isaiah Fawkes Everhart’s fascination with birds became a beautiful collection of thousands of animal, rock, and fossil specimens housed with Dorflinger glass and folk art at the Everhart Museum in Scranton. See a show from a plush, red velvet seat at The F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in Wilkes-Barre, an opulent, restored Art Deco gem with golden walls of hand-painted wallpaper and gilded ceilings. Free your hands to find a beautiful shape in a hunk of cool, wet clay — in between sips at a Wheel & Wine workshop at the Mud & Maker’s pottery studio in Pottsville. In early summer, see the pale pink mountain laurel blooms pepper miles of rolling emerald peaks at Loyalsock Creek in Worlds End State Park in Forksville. In Eagles Mere, walk around Eagles Mere Historic Village, originally a glass factory, to see a collection of quaint cottages, eateries, and shops surrounding a 114-acre lake with hiking, biking, and walking trails. Smell the sweet, woodsy scent of lavender, and see fields of waving purple blossoms during high summer at the organic Hope Hill Lavender Farm in Pottsville. Splatter your sweetheart with paint — without worry it will hurt — in the beginner-friendly, low-impact paintball games at the 122-acre EMR Event Park in New Milford, which includes castles, towns, bunkhouses, and campsites.
