TWO TRAILS THAT GO THE DISTANCE Black Hills National Forest, as well as the state and national parks, contain over 450 miles of trails for you to explore. GEORGE S. MICKELSON TRAIL Named for the former governor who endorsed its construction, the George S. Mickelson Trail runs through the heart of the Black Hills. It connects Deadwood in the Northern Hills all the way to Edgemont in the Southern Hills. The 109-mile pathway made of crushed limestone follows a historic rail line, incorporating over 100 converted railroad bridges and four rock tunnels. The trail passes through national forest and privately-owned land. Rich with gold mining history, this historical trail is a premier rail trail in the west. The trail’s gentle slopes beckon runners, bikers, hikers and horseback riders of all abilities. People with physical limitations can experience the Mickelson Trail on an accessible trolley ride. Trolley on the Trail departs from various locations on specific dates throughout the summer months, and reservations are required. CENTENNIAL TRAIL The Centennial Trail, marking the 100th anniversary of South Dakota’s statehood, takes you through prairies and mountainous areas. The 111-mile trail begins at Bear Butte State Park, travels through Fort Meade Recreation Area, Black Hills National Forest, Custer State Park and ends in Wind Cave National Park. HIKING The uncrowded, natural surroundings of Western South Dakota are ideal for walking, hiking and backpacking.
