Toledo Bend & Tamales Zwolle Tamale Fiesta ©Mario Villafuerta, Hodges Gardens State Park Straddling Louisiana and Texas on the Sabine River and measuring up at 185,000 acres, Toledo Bend Reservoir holds the distinction of being the largest man-made body of water in the South. However, its real claim to fame swims beneath the surface. The Reservoir earned the number one spot on Bassmaster’s list of 100 Best Bass Lakes in both 2015 and 2016—the only lake to ever top the list twice. But don’t just take our word for it. Catch your own 10-pounder (also known as a “lunker”) by stopping by one of the lake’s many access points, such as North and South Toledo Bend State Parks or the Sabine River Authority’s Cypress Bend Park. Depending on the season, expect catfish, bream and crappie to be biting as well. Keep a sharp eye out for the bald eagles often seen nesting around the lake. When visiting the Toledo Bend area, be sure to drop in at other regional attractions. Explore 40 acres of flowers at Hodges Gardens State Park.
