The South Park basin towns of Fairplay, Como, Bailey and Alma boast local color gained from wonderfully diverse landscapes, fondly preserved historical sites, and mining and ranching heritage. South Park is a National Heritage Area tucked in a river valley flanked by 14,000-foot peaks. It has a wealth of natural assets, including mineral deposits, unique geological formations and 100-plus rare or endangered plant and animal species. Fairplay, established during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, is now the Trout Fishing Capital of Colorado, with 50-plus miles of Gold Medal streams. Explore via horseback or ATV for maximum fresh-air fulfillment. Find your way to the Windy Ridge Bristle-cone Pine Scenic Area, an unusual stand of ancient, wind-sculpted pines. Get a feel for life in the 1880s at South Park City, where 40 authentic, artifact-filled buildings have been transported from nearby mining communities. On Fairplay’s Main and Front streets, historical storefronts house eateries, galleries and shops. Find more Colorado history in Como, a tiny community with several 1800s-era buildings, like the Como Depot — once an integral stop on the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad. The Mountain Man Gallery exhibits works by local and regional artists, and hikers love to trek along Black Powder Pass Trail atop Boreas Pass for amazing views of the surrounding valleys. At 10,578 feet, Alma is the highest incorporated town in the U.S. Highlights include 13,185-foot Mosquito Pass (one of Colorado’s highest, and recommended only on foot or via OHV); the nearby ghost town of Buckskin Joe; and Alma Cemetery, where you can investigate stories of fortunes lost and found. For canyon views, stop in Bailey to stretch your legs in McGraw Memorial Park. Pop into Aspen Peak Cellars for local wines and a charcuterie lunch and hike into the Lost Creek Wilderness to camp along Goose Creek Trail.
