The Mocktail Movement

TAYLOR GARLAND 2023-10-19 04:00:45

From bona fide teetotalers to sober-curious weekend warriors, more and more people are reaching for low- and no-alcohol beverages, and bars are taking note. Enter: the mocktail. At Century Grand in Phoenix, visit three themed bars, each with its own specialty mocktail menu. At the New Orleans-styled Grey Hen, go for Mother’s Reward with an alcohol-free cousin to London dry gin; railroad car Platform 18 features fan favorite Temperance League with a Jamaican rum alternative; and tiki bar UnderTow’s mocktail list includes the Starboard and Steady with “bourbon” and ginger. An immersive experience full of wonder and mystery, 36 Below in Phoenix features a menu of complex mocktails. Descend the stairwell into a modern speakeasy that boasts a sensory experience of fantastical foliage, plush velvets and colorful tilework. Quench your thirst at Shift Kitchen and Bar in Flagstaff with an exquisite range of non-alcoholic beverages — from refreshing N/A libations to artisanal sodas — plus a dinner menu by Chef Christian Lowe, a 2023 James Beard Award semifinalist. Ghost Ranch in Tempe takes a slightly different approach, offering sophisticated nonalcoholic beverages such as the Prickly Pear Sparkler and the Cucumber Basil Cooler, which accompany the modern Southwest menu. Finally, Sidecar in Tucson is a funky bar with a selection of “softails” that showcase creative ABV-free flavors, such as the Electric Barnyard Heaven with cider vinegar, honey, lemon, cayenne and ginger.
